Ecological Sustainability

Improving soil, preventing water, improving sanitation and air, and maintaining biodversity
– Forestation (Aug. 08) : 3 forests, 80,000 trees and 370,000 seedlings in total
– Restoring grasslands (Aug. 08) : 80 hectares of natural restoration

Economical Sustainability

Producing new jobs local residents. increasing incomes, introducing new technologies and revewable energy sources.
– Hiring forest managers and workers: 1.5 person per hectare, in average
– New jobs created in 3 forests: 70 people per month, vocational training on the side
(e.g. agricultural technologies)
– Promoting local community’s self-sustainability by introducing renewable energy sources:
expected to reduce felling rate

Social Sustainability

Relieving the poor, preventing city centralizaiton, and lowering crime rate.
– In Bayannuur, 120 families out of 332 (1,353 person in total, from the data of year 2008) have monthly income lower
than $100 USD
– Preventing local residents from moving to city through producing new local jobs, therefore securing sustainable
population
– Systemizing resident network: promotes community spirit & creates democratic social atmosphere

Cultural Sustainability

Maintaining the diversity of local cultures and promoting healthier lifestyle through improving diets
– The Naadam Festival: khorkhog (Mongolian mutton dish) party in the forested land
– Diversifying diets by cultivating vegetables and organizing international food festivals

Educational Sustainability

Training future generations, improving education and exchanging culture
– Tree-planting, cultural exchanges between Mongolian & Korean students, international summer camps for students
from all over the world, eco-festivals, local bazaars for fundraising

A) Baganuur – City Model

– Classification : Forestation Model Establishment Project, forestation & creation of urban parks, environmental education and cultural exchange programs
– Time Period : since 2003 ~ ongoing
– Achievements : “Forest of Happiness” & “Korean Airlines Forest” – 45,000 trees In 2006: awarded the Best Park in Ulaanbaatar

B) Bayannuur – Steppe Model

– Classification : part of the “Mongolian National Greenbelt Project”
– The foothold forest of forestation in Mongolia, operation of a tree nursery, education of local population through “eco-festivals,” development of a self-sustaining model
– Time Period : since 2007 ~ ongoing
– Achievements : “Asia Hope Forest” – 80,000 trees and 300,000 saplings raised

C) Mandai Gobi – Barren Land Model

– Classification : participation in Mongolian National Greenbelt Project, forestation and prevention of yellow dust, employment of local population, development of citizen-government cooperation model
– Time Period : since 2009 ~ ongoing

D) Songino – City Model

– Classification : part of the “Mongolian National Greenbelt Project,” forestation and prevention of yellow dust, employment of local population, environmental education
– Time Period : since 2008 ~ ongoing
– Achievements : “Incheon Hope Forest” – 20,000 trees

E) Ulaanbaatar – Capital of Monogolia

– Classification : early forestation project
– Time Period : 2000 ~ 2004
– Achievements : Child Welfare Institution – 5,000 trees
Dr. Taejoon Lee Commemoration Park – 5,000 trees
